Donation

Assistance from Government is a mere N$473-00 per child per month – when received.

Besides this allowance we are totally dependable on our churches, corporate and individuals.

One can only make the calculations him/herself what the cost is to take real good care of a child’s basic needs. Then the additional costs come for the much needed therapy and additional educational classes.

About Us

The history of Huis Maerua Kinderhuis, first known as Suidwes Kinderoord Ouderust, began in the 60’s when the Dutch Reformed Church and the South West Africa government stood together and took pity on children who were in need of love, stability and security. At this stage the state was responsible for funding and the church for staffing.

In the 1980’s, the state withdrew and the church took full control of the organization.

As the years went on, the Kinderoord moved from Eros to Feld Street in the city centre and it was renamed after the large Maerua tree on the property.

Today we boast a lovely plot located between the Auas Mountains in Auasblick. A peaceful environment in nature which is the reason for tranquility and the feeling that the Creator is very close to us.

Despite all the changes in management and house parents
that have come and gone over the years, one thing has remained the same,
the purpose for which House Maerua Children’s Home is known –
Caring for our Children.

When we refer to care, it is not only about their material needs, but also the emotional and probably most importantly, the spiritual growth that we can offer each and every child in our home.

At present Huis Maerua Children’s Home can accommodate 24 children.  We work on a satellite system consisting of three homes that can each accommodate 8 children with a maximum capacity of 2 children sharing a room with each child given his/her own wardrobe, bed and desk.

All the houses are equipped with a kitchen, dining room and a living area. The house parents’ quarters are adjacent to the children’s quarters but is separated by a door to allow for privacy.

Why should you give?

Giving promotes cooperation and social connection

Giving promotes a sense of trust that strengthens our ties to others. Being kind and generous leads you to perceive other people more positively and more charitably and this fosters a heightened sense of interdependence and cooperation in your social community.

Giving makes us Happy

Altruistic behaviour releases endorphins and activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust, creating a “warm glow’ effect producing the positive feeling known as the “helpers high”. These symptoms can last up to two hours.

Giving is Good for your Health

It helps decrease stress and lowers blood pressure. Research has shown that having positive social interactions is central to good mental and physical health.

Giving Evokes Gratitude

Gratitude is integral to happiness, health and social bonds.

When you express your gratitude in words or actions, you not only boost your own positivity but other people’s as well and in the process you reinforce their kindness and strengthen your bond to one another.

Giving is contagious

When we give, we don’t only help the immediate recipient of our gift. We also spur a ripple effect of generosity through our community. When one person behaves generously, it inspires observers to behave generously later toward different people. Each person in a network can influence many more.

People on an ‘oxytocin high’ can potentially jump-start a virtuous circle where one person’s generous behaviour triggers another.
